Foundation
70%Index funds, blue-chip stocks, conservative bonds. If you hold crypto, Bitcoin and Ethereum live here. The goal is preservation plus modest growth. Boring on purpose.
Growth
22%Higher-conviction positions you have actually researched. Individual stocks. Crypto positions beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. The goal is to outperform the foundation bucket, with higher variance.
Speculation
8%Genuinely speculative positions. Small-cap crypto. Early-stage projects. Options. Things that might 10x or might go to zero. Treat this bucket as disciplined gambling money you can afford to lose entirely.
How this works
The framework comes from our Risk and Position Sizing tutorial. The published ranges are Foundation 60 to 80 percent, Growth 15 to 30 percent, and Speculation 5 to 10 percent maximum. The three risk tolerances on this tool sit at different points inside those bands:
Conservative: 80 / 15 / 5. Wider safety margin. Designed for someone who would lose sleep over a 30 percent drawdown.
Moderate: 70 / 22 / 8. Middle of the published range. A reasonable default for most people who want some upside without betting the house.
Aggressive: 60 / 30 / 10. At the edge of the published bands. Only appropriate for someone who can genuinely stomach the speculation bucket going to zero and the growth bucket halving, without panicking out.
These splits are a starting point, not a recommendation. The right number depends on your age, income, total assets, time horizon, and how you actually behave in a real drawdown. Most people overestimate their risk tolerance until the first time they see a 50 percent drop. Size accordingly.
